Its pages become well-thumbed. Its spine acquires a structural memory,opening easily to frequently consulted chapters that correspond to realpatient-care experiences at the bedside and offi ce. In creating the Oxford American Handbook of Geriatric Medicine , I believe that the publisher and authors have succeeded admirably in creating just such a resource.Collectively, the authors, all colleagues with whom I’ve worked, have amassed centuries of experience taking care of older adults and thinking about aging. Their expertise comes through clearly.However, there is something subtler that I have challenged the authors to convey and I hope the reader detects. That is one of tone. وقتی در کاوش‌های شهر سوخته سیستان جمجمه‌ای کشف شد که نشان می‌داد پزشکان آنجا در ۵۰۰۰ سال پیش عمل جراحی می‌کرده‌اند، مهر تایید دیگری بر قدمت پزشکی در ایران باستان زده شد. آن‌طور که در شاهنامه آمده رستم که اهل سیستان بود، با روشی پیشرفته به دنیا آمد که امروزه در جهان به سزارین مشهور است. هزاران سال بعد در دوران اسلامی هم ایرانیان به دنبال کشف راه‌های تازه‌تری در جهان درمان و پزشکی بودند؛ چنان‌ که در قرون وسطی کتاب‌های رازی و ابن‌سینا دست به دست در سراسر دنیا چرخید و ابن‌سینا «Avecina» پدر پزشکی جهان نام گرفت. اولین پزشکان ایران باستان روحانیان بودند که به نام مغان مشهورند. مغان در بخش غربی ایران قدیم یعنی سرزمین ماد زندگی می‌کردند. درمان بیماری‌های روحی و جسمی مردم کار آنها بود؛ هم پزشک بودند، هم روان‌پزشک. با ذکر و دعا و سرود،‌ روان‌پزشکی می‌کردند و با دارو و چاقو، پزشکی.
